What does a Management of Food Safety score of 30 mean?
A score of 30 means that urgent improvement is necessary in the management of food safety within your business.
This is the highest possible Management of Food Safety component score. FSA guidance describes little or no food safety knowledge and understanding, little or no appreciation of hazards and risks, and no food safety management procedures.
At this level, significant hazards may not be understood and effective controls may not be in place. Immediate and significant action is required in respect of serious risks, with other management, supervision, instruction and training issues addressed within any timescales given by your local authority.
Fundamental improvement to food safety management is required
Score 30 represents the most serious level within this component. FSA guidance describes no or totally inadequate food safety management procedures, poor compliance history and major weaknesses in food safety knowledge and understanding.
Significant hazards may not be understood or effectively controlled
FSA guidance describes significant hazards not being understood and no effective controls being in place. Major improvement may also be required in procedures, implementation, staff supervision, instruction and training.
Your inspection findings and instructions now take priority. A Score 30 shows the seriousness of the weaknesses in food safety management, but it does not tell you exactly which failures were identified at your business. Follow your inspection report, letter and any instructions from your food safety officer, particularly where immediate action or specific deadlines have been given.
What should you do now?
At Score 30, your inspection findings and any instructions from your food safety officer must take priority. Serious food safety risks require immediate attention, while the management procedures, controls, supervision and training identified as deficient must be addressed within the timescales you have been given.
Follow your inspection findings and instructions
Work through the inspection report, letter and any instructions issued by your local authority. Make sure every concern relating to food safety management, hazards, controls, procedures, supervision, instruction or training is understood and allocated for action.
Act immediately on serious food safety risks
Give immediate priority to any serious risks identified by your food safety officer. Put the required controls in place without delay and follow any specific restrictions, instructions or deadlines issued by your local authority.
Establish effective food safety management and controls
Make sure the significant hazards in your business are understood, suitable controls are in place and appropriate food safety management procedures are developed for the size and nature of the operation. The system must work in practice, not simply exist on paper.
Build knowledge, supervision and day-to-day implementation
Make sure relevant managers and staff understand the hazards and controls they are responsible for and receive suitable instruction, training and supervision. Check during normal operation that the procedures are being followed and that corrective action is taken when controls fail.
