Helping young people feel like scientists for the day
The UCLan and Ri Young Scientist Centre is a purpose-built laboratory at the University of Central Lancashire's Preston campus, providing interactive Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) workshops for young people aged 7–18.
Activities range from practical science sessions for primary school children through to more advanced laboratory work for A-Level students. Lab coats and PPE form an important part of the experience, helping students step into the role of a scientist while taking part in the workshops.
Lab coats for everyone from young children to adult demonstrators
The Young Scientist Centre needed lab coats suitable for a particularly wide range of wearers. Sizes had to extend from garments suitable for seven-year-old children right through to extra-large adult sizes.
The demonstrators also needed to be easily distinguishable from visiting students. Rather than using the standard white coat, the requirement was for their lab coats to be manufactured in a bespoke orange fabric.
Branding was equally important. Every coat needed to feature both the University of Central Lancashire and Ri identities, with the two embroidered logos given equal prominence.

Food Safety Direct provided a combination of standard and bespoke lab coats to meet the different requirements of the centre.
White lab coats were supplied across the required children's and adult size range, while custom orange lab coats were produced for the demonstrator team.
The garments were then professionally embroidered with the UCLan and Ri logos, creating a consistent identity across the clothing while maintaining the distinction between students and demonstrators.
